The four ladies of royal ascot!

For me, Royal Ascot is one of the most exciting times of the year and yes you guessed it - it is back for 2008! Where the ladies go crazy for those oh-so-gorgeous hats and we see the most chic and elegant outfits of the season...and somehow we completely forget the purpose of the event! But in the name of fashion and haute couture women everywhere the outfits and pictures and ladies grazing hats in the name of Phillip Treacy just over rides the uh... horse racing! Since recently seeing Sarah Jessica Parker parade her Phillip Treacy garden-like-green hat (featured three posts below this one) gorgeously at her London premier of Sex And The City:The Movie I think everyone everywhere is dieing to see what other creations he has on show at Ascot - especially seeing as how the master milliner himself helped launch the show!
The designer created this amazingly bold image (left in black and white) featuring one of his most iconic hats to start off the action!

Along side its world-class racing, for the second year Royal Ascot will be hosting the Royal Ascot Fashion Show in the Bessborough Restaurant which will be bringing together designers from around the world; Vivienne Westwood has already confirmed - to showcase the very latest male and female couture on the catwalk. (How exciting!! aah!) (expect a post on that one too!)

This woman (picture found on vogue) I believe is the epitome of 'Lady of Ascot number one'. Browsing through hundreds of pictures every year of royal ascot i think that there are four distinctly different types of 'ascot ladies'. This woman is wearing :

Dress: Vintage

Hat: Phillip Treacy (who else!?)

shoes: Christian Louboutin

Her overtly-chic almost reflecting Parisian chic image is what i'd call - Modern romantic. Clean cut black mixed with the sheer fabric above the neckline and the interesting puff-ball-like sleeves create modern romantic with a twist. She cleverly has balanced her shapes too perfection with the tight pencil skirt complimenting the more loose top half and the 'twist' brings in the hot pink Treacy creation which appears slightly reminiscent of Chanel's contrasting stripe and star combination.

The second type of 'ascot lady' is number two - Colourful romantic. This woman has once again stuck to the 'romantic' theme we seem to have found by adding a beautiful cream net hat to her crazily coloured (but accepted) outfit. She is taking the opportunity to wear vivid colours such as these, because she can, and because of the appropriate feeling behind them. Personally i think this style of ascot dressing is empowering, confident and most of all dead brave. What other event can you think of where a woman can match beautiful bride meets clashing neon rainbow shades? Because i cant! This modern look has worked well for her and is another beautifully classic style of dressing that crops up each year! Be sure to see several more of these to come!

Style number four - the-outrageous-licence-to-dress-outrageously -creative! such as this woman on the left with what appears to be a cigarette in an ash tray on her head! I think she looks fabulous and maybe she's trying to convey a message at the same time; stop smoking? hmm. I think these outfits are bold enough to be ambiguous to the viewer, either way she has pulled off look number three stupendously! The colours are creative enough for ascot and her neckline has been put into great proportion by teaming the low cut V with the small black tie which i think may be what is holding the hat to her head!? Very creative.

The last style of 'ascot lady' i believe is the vintage dreamer romantic. This woman here is the prime example of this style - the cream coloured graceful parasol says it all. Her Scarlett Johanson haircut is poignant, elegant and matches this group perfectly. The parasol here (absolutely to die for!) is my favourite accessory seen at royal ascot so far because of its dreamy and very from the 1800's feeling gives an elegant and beautifully vintage sense. She has matched this with her cream-salmon hat which appears to be in the exactly correct position to compliment the parasol well. Elements such as: ruffles, silk, lace and golden hues perfect this image to a T. Personally i think she looks like a character out of Pride and Prejudice and she belongs in a castle like setting - yet also she has concocted this outfit so perfectly that she definitely belongs at Royal Ascot!

Hot hats for the hopefully hot summer!

I have had a love of hats since i was a mini little girl! What with ascot coming up and all! (expect a post about that!) I am currently scouring the internet for the perfect summer hats - http://www.vogue.com/ has recently made a post about hats being the new accesory for this summer and I have to say I adore the picture they have used (seen above in my header).

I recently attempted to create my own hat - for school and it actually turned out better than i thought! What do we think? Its the purple one at the top of this post! The colourful sash ontop of it is removable and can be placed in different places depending on how you feel at the time! Its also reversible - hence the bright colours on one side and the dark purple on the other! the reversed side is featured below.

I'm currently working on a collection of miniature sized hats using sheer materials - hot pinks and leopard prints mixed with oriental patterns on silks and satins, i'm thinking about putting a few designs on here as a poll type post to see what people prefer then perhaps create some more!?

Here is some inspiration...

Hope everyone's having a great weekend in this glorious sunshine!! xxxx

beauty or beast?

I decided today that the term 'fashion victim' is awful. (Apologies oscar de la renta...who apparently created the phrase)According to Giorgio Armani "When a woman alters her look too much from season to season, she becomes a fashion victim."

Perhaps in the sense of being hooked upon fashion and being somewhat 'addicted' to it needs a new term? I've seen the phrase 'fashion victim' around a lot recently and its been playing with my mind, a victim is an unfortunate person who suffers from some adverse circumstance. Who in this world has been 'an unfortunate person who suffers from an adverse circumstance to do with fashion'?

what is the actual definition of a 'fashion victim'?

would you class yourself as one?

I guess maybe i'm being over analytical once again? or ... not?

what does everyone think? is 'victim' too strong and could possibly cause offence? Are you one? Do you know of one? what would be your idea of a 'fashion victim'?

hmmm.....

Political statements WANTED on fashion statements!

FAITH HAVE A HUUUGE SALE CURRENTLY!! (faith the shoe shop i mean!) I went shopping today and finally bought myself some shoes for my prom what do we all think? They're the ones in the pic above! I'm considering buying them in the pink as well! (i got them in the green today!) such a great price too. but it made me think - what is it about shoes that can make a girl get all exited and happy and joy full? For instance they were probably created just to protect out feet but now (to me anyway) they are like an art form!

What is it about beautiful shoes that some of us just ... love?

Update: Marc Jacobs dress below

DISCOVERY: OHMYGOSHFORMARCJACOBS!

So, I wanted to know where prettylegit.blogspot.com 's yellow skirt was from on teenvogue.com 's intern blog and she says its vintage michael kors from ' beacons closet' in brooklyn (america) and i was downhearted because obviously this is a place over the pond as i live in england! UNTIL I FOUND http://www.beaconscloset.com/ where i found a cute zac posen dress for only $64 which if i bought obviously in pounds instead - this equals to about 30 pounds! YAAAAYY!!! and a gorgeous blue and purple (seen above) marc by marc jacobs dress for $64 woo! I shall be buying this within the next few days when i get some pennies into my bank! i suggest you all check this site out - have a great evening - xx

Vrai ou faux? : Gorgeous arty fashion online...

So, recently I came across http://www.yoox.com/. I think i read about it in a magazine or something? Anyway I went on their website and signed up to their emails (i'm a true online-shop-email-junkie!). In all honesty they never really caught my eye that much and I never really went on the website ever since...until they emailed me today. A neon style ecstatic array of rainbows bursted from the mail and really caught my attention so i took a little trip to the land of yoox.com.

"Chicks on speed" is their latest exclusive collection of which appeared gorgeous and extremely art meets poise - I was intrigued. Looking through the collection online at http://www.yoox.com/ I had been thrown - personally I wasn't kean on the (only tee's) collection which consisted of bright applique's and odd quirky cuts, not my style.

Opinions? Could the initial email have been a potential lie? Or am I just being overly fussy and critical? - Happy Friday to all!

The shoe-boot

Christian Louboutins anyone?

Since their launch to fame and popularity quite some time just before christmas 2007 the shoe-boot continues to reign! appx 8 months down the line and this fantasitcly sculpted style of shoe (and boot!) is still around, what do you think? Personally I LOVE SHOE BOOTS! My favourite are the edgy patent laced ones with small vintage looking brogue patterns down the sides *gasp* perfection!

Anyway what do you all think?

p.s the shoes at the top and bottom are christian louboutin available from net-a-porter.com BUT the ones in the middle are from asos.com by miss L-fire!

SECOND UPDATE! : Magazine discovery...

Well, i was on the search for a magazine to suit young people (younger than me perhaps around the 14 years old mark) that are more mature and fashion forward and intelligent than what appears to be the target audience of typical teen mags. Believe me it wasn't easy. First stop:

Elle girl, aimed at appx 11-15 year olds? But it appears as though the fashion pages are not as developed as something like Another, i-d and Vogue. This is obviously because younger people who would typically read this mag would have a more young take on their personal fashion sense - but it wasn't enough. The articles consisted of firstly finals (meaning like gcse exams in england i guess) which you take when your between 16 and 18 years old - the mag isn't aimed at this age range so why have they written about it? I wasn't satisfied.

The more i thought about it, the more i thought - it is likely that there are more girls out there that enjoy elle girl than don't. This made me think - if a small group of more mature girls across the globe are too fashion forward for younger magazines then surely they are able to use the Internet properly? SO i have collected a group of links to fantastic fashion magazines (which are online) which are suitable for every age group because this way you can select what to look at and what not to look at!
So for all of those girls out there, these are for you! and there are plenty more, you just have to look in the right places!

enjoooyy!!! xx

Update: Fashion mags.

Since posting my previous blog 'Fashion: internationally...unrecognized!?' I have discovered something. With the help of a commenter on the previous blog, i thought to myself - what do those do who are too fashion forward and mature for 'teen mags' but not quite at the stage where they want to read about typical 'womens magazine' articles? Research is in order - I'm getting onto the case! ...

Fashion: Internationally...unrecognized!?

Vogue - a world wide style bible to all, an important factor which has vastly affected the shaping of society ( 's dress sense) over the years. 'Vogue' is said to suggest transient impermanent fashion ability. Not only is it the most influential magazine of all time but it is a lifestyle, a dream and something which i could hand on my heart say that is internationally recognised.

But why is it that no other fashion magazine has appeared to rise to the same iconic status along side it? This inspired me to hunt for...well i wasn't particularly sure what for but i had a feeling i was looking for a somewhat hidden vogue?

ENTER : 'ANOTHER MAGAZINE' !! (This means more than it looks!)

The irony of the situation - i found myself searching for quite literally searching for another magazine - just to find 'Another Magazine'...
http://www.anothermag.com/

I am whole heatedly not doubting the success of vogue - as it is in fact my favourite, but I knew that there must be more, just hidden perhaps? Wandering through the shelves of mags in WHSmiths and coming across this striking cover of Uma Thurman meets artistic half butterfly really took me by surprise. Here are my findings:
It was the 14Th issue
It is a bi-annual magazine (meaning published twice a year)
It is very fashion-forward consisting of a mix from McQueen to Venetia Scott to D&G and Mark Segal.
It is a very precise and down to the point publication
It cleverly blends fashion with art and literature
This is not your ordinary stereotypical 'fashion magazine'

So, from what i have found - i think i was just searching for a change maybe? And i believe i have found it! i reccomend 'another' (link to their site above) to every fashion intelligent human! Of course it is only published twice a year which makes it different, but its wonderfully crafted arty meets seriousness of each page is simply...art work!

The question still ponders though - why is this concious and brilliantly fulfilling magazine so...unrecognised?

Opinions? What do you think of their mag & site? How does it compare to Vogue? Happy blogging! xxxxx
