I'm not from England. I did a semester abroad in London my Junior year at LCC. I grew up about 2 hours outside of Manhattan. I left after graduating high school to attend Parsons for photography. I guess that's all I can say about how I escaped suburbia. My mom fully supported me [and supports me now that I'm out of school and detoxing from a stressful year] I understand it's your dream to leave, but you're leaving for a great unknown that isn't worth it. They pay is so little in these magazines, you give up your life, and it's not enough to live in Manhattan unless you have your parents support or you live less than the ideal life. And by less I mean read any recent article in the New York Times about money and how some people can only live on 4 dollars a day, have 3 or more roommates, etc...
It sounds all glamorous in theory but I would start in London and move my way up that way vs slaving for a magazine that takes young girls and spits them out for little to no pay. At least there you might be able to survive with family near by.
Hope that helps a little, I know it's all gloomy, but the US economy isn't getting any better and the job market is painfully competitive as it is even if you know everyone. Coming in and not knowing the right people is pretty difficult.
